RSOC AREDN Mesh Link Re-established
A rare failure of a mesh node (the only one we’ve ever had) took down the 5.8 GHz mesh link from the RSOC to the old Fire Station 2 (FS2) building at Anchorage Int’l Airport some time ago. We’ve been relying on a mesh tunnel connection since then to bridge the gap.
Yesterday, Kent (KL5T) and Richard (KL2AZ) made the trip to the site and replaced the defective Ubiquiti M5-300 node with a Mikrotik LHG. The link is re-established and running at about 72 Mbps.
Currently, there is a 5.8 GHz link between the RSOC and FS2 and 3.4 GHz links between FS2 and our two hillside nodes (Hillside North and Hillside South). We hope to add redundancy by installing a second link between the RSOC and FS2 at 2.4 GHz, and installing a 5.8 GHz node to link between FS2 and at least one of our Hillside sites. FYI — Hillside South is indeed scheduled to receive a 5.8 GHz sector that will provide coverage for most of the Anchorage bowl. Additionally, a 5.8 GHz Sector is also planned for install at the EARS station on Elmemdorf AFB.
