Silent Key – Karen M. Walker, KL7KW

From Mark Sabel, WD6BMJ …

Karen M. Walker
July 27, 1964 – October 4, 2023

It is with intense grief that I inform the membership that Karen Walker, KL7KW, became a Silent Key on October 4, 2023 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.   Karen became interested in radio communications while working I.T. support in Antarctica. Karen spent several seasons “on the ice” including wintering over at the South Pole Station.  An AARC highlight was the Field Day when Karen made a voice QSO with an astronaut on the International Space Station.  As a professional tour guide she seldom had free time in summer. But when possible she volunteered with the Club at race events, her Yaesu VX-7R handheld at the ready.  A 15+ time volunteer at remote Iditarod checkpoints she worked with race communications. She was only 59 at the time of her death. Karen will always be remembered for her intelligence, kindness, love of nature and sweet smile framed by her long wavy brown hair.  Karen is survived by her brother, Brian Walker, father Mose Walker, both of Portland, Oregon and her significant-other of 13 years, Mark Sabel, WD6BMJ of Anchorage.
